Antiques

A family business for 102 years this year!

For 102 years, my family has offered antiques of all varieties. The elements of business I have been handed down are that of honesty & integrity. I stand behind all items I offer for sale and I try to describe them as best as I can.

Reference book of the month

I have purchased an antiques reference library and I need to move some books.  There are some interesting items; first editions, scarce references, auction catalogs, and short pamphlets.  I'll showcase one per month but if there is a reference you are looking for, I might have it.  Send me a note.

April 2024  New Jersey Arts and Crafts: The Colonial Expression.  Monmouth Museum.  From 1972, this is a catalog of the Monmouth Museum's exhibition of mostly colonial items centering on Monmouth County.  There is a very nice variety of objects in this catalog, even though not everything is illustrated.  There is minor staining on the inside of the covers but otherwise in good condition.

March 2024 Louis C. Tiffany's Glass-Bronzes-Lamps by Robert Koch.  Sixth printing 1978.  For this month's reference, I chose a book I really will never use.  If you are familiar with Tiffany's work, you will enjoy this book.  Lots of photos and a price list for 1906.  Very good condition with a plastic dust jacket.

ebruary 2024 Historic Silver Of The Colonies And Its Makers.   Francis Hill Bigelow.  1925.  This is quite a nice reference of very early silver in America.  There are examples from the colonies as well as Europe, mostly 17th & 18th century.  Very good condition.

January 2024  This month's selection is Southern Antiques & Folk Art by Robert Morton 1976.  First Edition.  This reference has excellent examples of design from furniture to textiles to art and musical instruments.  Basically, something from every section of the antiques of the American south.  In very good condition.

December 2023  Here is The Windsor Chair by Thomas H. Ormsbee from 1962.  I chose this book today because illustrated on Page 130, Illustration 47, is a high chair from Pennsylvania which is very closely related to the windsor chair I used as a youngster.  Growing up in an antiques dealer's home, I guess it wouldn't be any other way!  I still have my high chair and it sits in our bedroom.  The book is in very good condition although the dust jacket is only fair.

SOLD

November 2023  For this month's book, I have chosen a classic reference, The American Chair Three Centuries of Style by Robert Bishop.  This is a 1983 edition and has a forward by Winterthur's Charles F. Hummel.  This has everything from carvers to horn chairs and is a fine addition to any reference collection.  The book is in very good condition with some tearing to the dust jacket.

October 2023  Useful Beauty, Early American Decorative Arts from the St. Louis Collections, David H. Conradsen.  1999.  This is a really nice catalog of 18th century furniture and silver design.  The plates are full color with full descriptions.  The dust jacket is torn but the book is in excellent condition.

September 2023  I am a little late this month but here is reference for iron.  Early American Ironware.  Henry J. Kauffman.  Published in Japan, second printing 1967.  There are over 200 plates of some very cool design and examples of early iron and tin.  No dust jacket but very good condition.

August 2023  For August, I have selected this reference for wood planes.  A Guide To American Wooden Planes and Their Makers.  Emil & Martyl Pollak.  1983.  First Edition.  I have not read this book but it appears to be a great reference for planemakers.  It is in very good condition.

July 2023  American Art Pottery.  Lucile Henzke.  Second Printing.  For this month, I am offering this nice book on American art pottery.  The nice part of this reference, to me, is that not only does it have some nice color plates as well as many black and white images, it shows lots of maker's marks.  The book is in very nice condition with a small tear in the dust jacket at the top of the spine.

June 2023  The Philadelphia Chair 1685-1785.Joseph K. Kindig III.  The Historical Society of York County.  Per the notes, this is the catalog of the exhibition of the Philadelphia Chair 1685-1785 at the Historical Society of York County May 28 through September 23, 1978.  It is approximately 108 pages of  plates and descriptions, along with design highlights.  The cover is OK with a small stain and binding split.  The interior has no flaws.

May 2023.  Boston Furniture of the Eigtheenth Century.  University of Virginia Press.  1986 Reprint.  Walter Muir Whitehill, Editor.  This reference has all kinds of wonderful examples; bombe', blockfront, japanned, and more.  It also has a cabinetmaker list and detailed maps and diagrams.  I almost hate to sell it.  Very good condition.

SOLD

April 2023.  Furniture In Maryland 1740-1940.  The Collection of the Maryland Historical Society.  Gregory R. Weidman.  Published in 1985, this is a paperback edition.  I admit I don't see many identified pieces from Maryland, but this reference is quite nice.  There are over 250 black and white photos and some in color.  In the back is a checklist of Maryland craftsmen.  Condition is slightly worn but good.

March 2023.  American Arts & Crafts - Virtue In Design.  "A catalogue of the Palevsky/Evans Collection and Related Works at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art".  Leslie Greene Bowman.  1990.  First Edition.  I am the first to admit that Arts & Crafts are not my thing, but this book is a really well done reference.

For February 2023, American Bottles Old & New by William S. Walbridge.  1920.  First Edition.  Good condition with some separation of the binding at Page 30-31.  The contents are complete and good.  Paper label on cover.  Published by the Owens Bottle Company, where William S. Walbridge was the Vice President, Toledo, OH.  A nice little reference about glassmaking.
